The North Texas Winter Exterior Checklist: What to Clean Now and What to Wait On
A freeze can arrive within days, and it decides which jobs belong on your calendar this fall.
In this article
North Texas winters are mild until they aren't. One week it's 70 degrees, the next brings a hard freeze, and that swing decides what you can clean on your home's exterior now and what should wait until spring.
Gutters: clear them after the leaves drop
Late fall is when gutters fill. Wet leaves, needles and shingle grit pack into downspouts, and when a freeze arrives, standing water in a clogged gutter can freeze, add weight and spill over along the roofline. Getting gutters cleared once the trees have dropped most of their leaves, ideally before the first hard freeze, is the most valuable exterior job of the season. Our gutter cleaning includes photo-documented results so you can see the downspouts run clear. If you're weighing guards, read gutter guards vs. regular cleaning.
Pressure washing: do it before the freeze, or wait
Pressure washing puts a lot of water on concrete, pavers and walkways. In freezing temperatures that water can turn into a slick film on driveways and steps, which is a safety problem for you and your guests. The best window for pressure washing flatwork is now, while temperatures are mild and surfaces dry fully. If a hard freeze is in the forecast, waiting is the right call.
Paver sealing: mild and dry only
Sealers need mild temperatures and dry conditions to cure properly, so we schedule paver sealing around the weather rather than rush it. If your pavers are due, book a mild, dry stretch this fall. Otherwise plan for spring, when sealing restores color and protects against weeds and stains without fighting the weather.
Windows: winter is a fine time
Low winter sun makes streaks and mineral spots obvious, which is a good reason to clean. A professional window cleaning visit covers both sides of the glass, plus frames, sills and screens, and gets your home ready for the season you spend the most time indoors.
Solar panels: winter dust costs you
Panels collect dust, pollen and mineral film, and winter is when the sun is already at its weakest. Solar panel cleaning with de-ionized pure water and no abrasive contact keeps that film from limiting the output you do get.
Holiday lights: prepare the surfaces first
If you're having lights installed, clean gutters and rooflines first. Clean surfaces make a safer, tidier install. We handle Christmas lighting from design through takedown. Before you hire anyone, read what to ask a Christmas light installer and why homeowners book in September.
A simple seasonal timeline
- October to November: gutters after leaf drop, windows, pressure washing, solar panels, paver sealing if conditions are mild and dry
- December: lighting installs run through December 12, 2026, with limited slots; hold off on flatwork cleaning if freezing temperatures are forecast
- January to February: light takedown, interior and exterior window touch-ups
- March: pressure washing and paver sealing season restarts
